Johnny Dumfries, later known as John Crichton-Stuart, 7th Marquess of Bute, (26 April 1958 – 22 March 2021) was a British racing driver. He is most famous for being the teammate of Ayrton Senna at Lotus in the 1986 Formula One season and for winning the 1988 24 Hours of Le Mans race.
Early Life and Career: Dumfries came from a privileged background, being the son of the 6th Marquess of Bute. He initially pursued a career in racing under a pseudonym to avoid undue attention. He quickly showed promise in Formula Ford and Formula Three.
Formula One: His big break came in 1986 when he secured a seat with the Lotus team alongside the legendary Ayrton Senna. He struggled to match Senna's performance and faced criticism throughout the season. He finished 13th in the championship, with his best result being 5th place at the Hungarian Grand Prix. Lotus replaced him with Satoru Nakajima for the 1987 season.
Sports Car Racing: After Formula One, Dumfries found considerable success in sports car racing. He was part of the Jaguar team that won the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1988, driving alongside Jan Lammers and Andy Wallace. He also competed in other sports car races, achieving several podium finishes.
Later Life: In 1993, he inherited the title of Marquess of Bute following the death of his father. He managed the Mount Stuart House and estate on the Isle of Bute and pursued business interests.
Death: Johnny Dumfries died on 22 March 2021, after a battle with cancer.
